Music

Brooklyn’s live-music spine runs from the converted warehouses in East Williamsburg and Bushwick through the historic theaters in Park Slope and Fort Greene, down to the cocktail-bar-sized rooms in Greenpoint and Carroll Gardens. A few rooms to know:

• Mercury Lounge — small, well-booked indie room with a fast turnover; the kind of place to catch a band a year before they sell out a 1,500-cap venue.
• The Bell House — bigger, polished sound, equal parts indie, comedy, and trivia. The Sunday-afternoon shows are often the best deal.
• Barclays Center — the arena-tier venue. Worth checking the calendar even if you don’t usually go to arena shows — the booking range is wider than you’d expect.

Comedy

If you’re new to NYC comedy, the rooms in Brooklyn skew younger and looser than the Manhattan circuit. Two reliable picks:

• Union Hall in Park Slope — the basement room hosts weekly stand-up showcases.
• Littlefield in Gowanus — bigger room, often hosts touring comics and podcasts.

Free / cheap

Brooklyn has a real cheap-and-free events scene that most aggregators undersell. Check the events list and filter by free or set the date range to this weekend. A lot of community events at Prospect Park, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, and along the waterfront are no-cover or pay-what-you-can.
