Footwork Appreciation Month: Heavee, Rhino Clark, BEYBLADE SHAWTY, Petal, Chelsea

Public Records

First appearing in the mid-1980s as a derivative form of ghetto house, footwork has since evolved into a faster, markedly more frenetic style of battle-forward dance music than its predecessor. Shaped by the legacies of legendary dance group House-O-Matics, battle crew U-PHI-U, and pioneering producers RP Boo, Traxman, and DJs Slugo and Rashad, footwork’s rising star exploded internationally in the 2010s, with fans honoring the culture’s heritage and history across the globe. In 2025, decades after originating on the South and West sides of Chicago, Cook County formally declared August Footwork Appreciation Month (F.A.M.) in recognition of the art form’s extraordinary impact and cultural legacy. A year later, on the heels of his latest Moveltraxx single release (“House It Up” with DJ Phil), NYC welcomes Chicago’s very own Heavee in honor of F.A.M. With releases dating back to 2009, the Teklife-affiliated dancer-turned-producer is a pillar of contemporary footwork culture. Influenced by his late mentor DJ Rashad, the vast possibilities of digital worlds, and his own personal commitment to the art form, Heavee’s boundary-pushing work continues to broaden the scope of what footwork looks, sounds, and feels like. The headlining DJ is supported by Chelsea, Petal, Rhino Clark, and BEYBLADE SHAWTY, four local sound artists/footwork enthusiasts whose work traverses the boundless expanse of Black electronic dance music. \- Public Records aims to provide a safer space.
